Georgia Medicaid

Medicaid may help pay for care at home

Georgia runs several Medicaid waiver programs that help people get support at home instead of moving to a nursing home or other facility. The rules can feel confusing. We'll help you navigate eligibility and the application, one step at a time.

Older adults & adults with disabilities

Elderly & Disabled Waiver Program (EDWP)

Georgia's main home-care waiver for older or disabled Georgians who would otherwise need nursing-home-level care. It includes two options:

  • CCSP (Community Care Services Program)
  • SOURCE (available in certain counties; adds primary-care coordination)

Services can include personal care, respite, adult day care, and home-delivered meals.

Ages 21–64

Independent Care Waiver Program (ICWP)

For adults ages 21 to 64 with a severe physical disability or traumatic brain injury (TBI) who need help with daily activities. Services can include personal support, home health, and home modifications. Spots are limited.

Intellectual & developmental disabilities

NOW & COMP Waivers

The New Options Waiver (NOW) and Comprehensive Supports Waiver (COMP) serve Georgians with intellectual or developmental disabilities. They're run day-to-day by the Department of Behavioral Health and Developmental Disabilities (DBHDD). Services can include community living supports and respite.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

Does Georgia Medicaid pay for in-home care?
It can. Georgia's Medicaid waiver programs, such as the Elderly and Disabled Waiver Program (CCSP and SOURCE), ICWP, and NOW/COMP, may cover in-home support for people who qualify. The state decides eligibility, and some programs have waitlists. We'll help you figure out where to start.
Can I refer myself or a family member?
Yes. You don't need a doctor's referral to start. For the Elderly and Disabled Waiver, families usually begin with their regional Aging and Disability Resource Connection (ADRC). For NOW/COMP, intake goes through DBHDD. We'll give you the right number and help you prepare.
What if we're still waiting on Medicaid approval?
Many families start with a few hours of private-pay care while an application is pending, then switch once services are authorized. We'll talk through costs honestly before anything starts.
How are caregivers screened?
In a real agency, caregivers would pass background checks, reference checks, and training before their first visit. (Specifics would be listed here for a real client.)
Do you provide medical or nursing care?
Our services are non-medical: personal care, companionship, homemaking, and reminders. If your loved one needs skilled nursing, we can coordinate with their home health provider.
How quickly can care begin?
For private-pay care, often within a few days of a free in-home consultation. Medicaid waiver services begin once the state authorizes them.
